My family and I don’t have the yard to grow an actual garden. That hasn’t stopped us from learning about gardens and the plant cycle though. We experiment with container gardening, growing vegetables in pots sitting outside our patio.
The inspiration? My five-year-old thought he could plant picked flowers into his play dough sand and watch it grow. I knew then I had to introduce real gardening, or at least real plants growing. I also want my kids to feel like they’re helping the earth and doing their part.
It’s actually cheaper to buy vegetables in the market than grow them ourselves. Not to mention how much quicker it is to buy than to wait several weeks to finally reap the rewards..
For instance, we bought one 12″ pot, two bags of soil and plant food just to grow one swiss chard. Then there’s the daily watering and waiting.
But that’s what’s awesome about gardening. There’s no “purpose” other than the delight of watching a seed grow into a bunch of vegetables. The kids get to see the growth process, from seed to plucking them from the soil. They anticipate the day we get to finally yank them out and start anew.
Plus here’s the best part: my kids look forward to eating meals cooked with our vegetables. Nothing gets them more excited about eating vegetables than growing and planting them.
As usual, I like to reinforce what we’re learning with books. These books talk about the growth of a plant from seed to fruition. The seasons of the year and how they impact our food and gardens. Some even give tips on just what you need to grow the vegetables you place on your table. If you’re looking for children’s books about gardening for toddlers and little kids, look no further.
