Instill the beauty and value of growing gardens! Here are the best children’s books about gardening.
My family and I don’t have the yard to grow an actual garden, but this hasn’t stopped us from learning about gardening and the plant cycle. We experiment with container gardening, growing vegetables in pots sitting outside our patio.
The inspiration? My five-year-old thought he could plant picked flowers into his play dough sand and watch it grow. I knew then I had to introduce real gardening, or at least how plants actually grow. I also want my kids to feel like they’re helping the earth and doing their part.
Sometimes it’s cheaper to buy vegetables in the market than grow them ourselves. Not to mention how much quicker it is to buy than to wait several weeks to finally reap the rewards. Then there’s the daily watering and waiting.
For instance, we bought a 12″ pot, two bags of soil and plant food just to grow one swiss chard.
But that’s what’s awesome about gardening. There’s no “purpose” other than the delight of watching a seed grow into vegetables. The kids get to see the growth process, from seed to harvesting from the soil. They anticipate the day we get to finally reap our produce and start anew.
Plus here’s the best part: my kids look forward to eating meals cooked with our vegetables. Nothing gets them more excited about eating vegetables than growing and planting them.
As usual, I like to reinforce what we’re learning with books about the growth of a plant from seed to fruition. We also learn about the seasons of the year and how they impact our food and gardens. Some books even give tips on just what you need to grow the vegetables you place on your table.
