Isn’t it crazy how we imagine the future? Whether it’s 1985 or 2015, we think the future means shiny clothes and our wildest inventions. We picture a future filled with conveniences galore. All our “Wouldn’t that be cool if…” answered.
30 years ago, Back to the Future introduced us self-walking dogs and 3D billboards when Marty McFly traveled to none other than October 21, 2015. And while some predictions came true (video conferencing, anyone?) I’m still holding out for some of these pretty cool things I wish really existed:
We still haven’t taught our almost six-year-old how to tie laces. Those Velcro shoes are so darn convenient. And if not those, then there are always slip-ons. Self-tying laces would just about give me another excuse never to have to tie another lace again.
Jackets that know how to dry themselves would be awesome, especially in the rainy season. No more hanging the jackets out to dry! Can they also make a version for kids’ swimsuits so they’re not strewn all across the bathroom?
Food dehydrators, aka inflatable pizzas
I always loved the scene when Marty’s mom tore open a tiny packet of pizza. The kids responded by exclaiming how ‘large’ it was. Lo and behold, she slid the pizza into the food dehydrator, and presto—a large pizza in mere seconds.
Imagine how convenient this would be when feeding the kids! Food in the refrigerator wouldn’t take up as much space, and dinner would be ready in seconds.
Robotic trash cans
We already have robotic vacuum cleaners—how about robotic trash cans? These would be handy in the street. Any time anyone is about to toss something in the street, a robotic trash can would zip right up.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seriously wished I had a flying car whenever I’d be stuck in Los Angeles traffic. Of course, this would only work if I had the only flying car. Angelenos would figure out a way to have traffic in the sky too. But that would be awesome to be able to lift up and zoom into the sky.
That scene where Marty pulls the little girl’s scooter apart to use the hoverboard still makes me wish I had one of my own. I wasn’t even into skateboards but that hoverboard and the ability to be off the ground even for a few inches was enough to make me a fan.
The Re-Release: October 21, 2015
If you haven’t guessed by now, I’m a huge fan of Back to the Future. I watched all three movies many, many times, and it has become one of those timeless films I could continue to watch over and over.
While none of these items have yet to be invented, here’s the next best thing: Back to the Future is being re-released as digital and physical copies on October 21! The movie will also be shown in theaters across the country. Fans everywhere can re-live looking for 1.3 gigowatts and waiting in anticipation as Marty traveled back to the future.
Your turn: Which of the three Back to the Future movies is your favorite? Which gadget do you wish really existed right now?
