Before we had kids, my husband and I made it a point to visit outdoor places. We’d hike, visit the beach or bike along a pier. Living in Los Angeles, we have plenty of tourist spots for just this sort of thing. But what many don’t know about are the cities surrounding LA, such as Newport Beach.
Beach cities along the California coast offer amazing options, from dining to nature. My relatives live in Newport Beach, so I have an extra incentive to visit. Getting there includes a scenic drive along a lake. Plus you can’t beat the beautiful year-round weather typical of southern Cali.
In this post, I’ll give you a sneak peek into Newport Beach. Located about an hour away from where I live, it’s a great spot for plenty of outdoor date ideas.
The beautiful Back Bay offers dirt trails perfect for hiking, jogging and biking. You can also learn about the plants and habitats along the bay at the Muth Interpretative Center. Take the routes closer to the cars or hike farther along the connecting trails for a longer trail.
Newport Beach Pier
Catch a stunning view of the sunrise or sunset on the Newport Beach Pier. You’ll also see several fishermen on the pier reeling in their catch of the day. Parking can be tough, but arrive early and you’ll be fine. You can walk along the pier or even under it! When you’re ready to eat, the pier has tons of restaurants and bars.
Whale Watching Excursion
Daily whale-watching year-round is an awesome experience you’ve got to try. Giant blue whales make their appearance in the summer and fall, and gray whales in the winter and spring. Boats include a snack bar, indoor and outdoor seating, bathrooms and an observation deck.
Crystal Cove State Park includes beaches, tide pools, open bluffs and canyons. Activities include camping, mountain biking, horseback riding and hiking. You can also visit the beautiful beaches and tide pools on Reef Point. Scotchman’s Cove offers great waves for surfing. And the district includes 46 restored historical beach cottages built int he 1920s and 1930s.
If you’ve ever tried paddle boarding, you know it’s an insane workout! You’re balancing on a board while steering with a paddle. While you get an awesome workout, you’re also right in the middle of the water and enjoying the scenic views.
Visit Newport Beach for your next outdoor date excursion. The city welcomes both nearby locals like me or those further away. You’ll have tons of options to choose from, including the ones I mentioned above. For even more things to do in Newport Beach like dining and night life, go to Visit Newport Beach.
Your turn: Have you visited Newport Beach? What’s your favorite outdoor date idea?
