January 20 is National Cheese Day! I’m partnering up with Chuck E. Cheese to bring you a list of my all-time cheesy memories from back in the day. Then, I’ll give you my predictions of what I think we’re doing now that we’ll consider cheesy in a few years.
What is it about memories that makes 99% of it so cheesy? Thinking back through my early years, I can think of several instances, including:
#1: Prom dresses
Remember shopping for prom dresses? They had to be floor-length and spaghetti strap, with gloves covering the length of my whole arm. Hairstyles were curled and pinned, with the obligatory strays down the side of the face. Sideburns, really. And do kids these days still buy one another corsages and boutonnieres?
#2: Watching television shows that ended with a moral
You knew the show was wrapping up when the dad made his speech about why it’s wrong to lie or say mean things to your sister. If that didn’t convince you, the monologue included a music montage meant to evoke a lesson. Every show I watched followed this cheesy format.
#3: Studio portraits at the mall
Please tell me I’m not the only one who took studio portraits at the mall. And did you go with your group of friends (or sometimes cousins) in matching outfits, too? I had so many of these in high school, and we traded them like baseball cards. Here’s an example:
Check out my snazzy over-sized scrunchy. It only gets better:
That was when I started to be too cool to smile. And check out the animal print! *Cringe*
So, what do I predict will be future cheese-fest about what we do now?
- Matching pajamas on Christmas morning: They may be awesome now, but something tells me you’ll be laughing about those when they’re older.
- Hand-on-the-hip pose: I think I’m still the only one who’s okay with her arm looking fat in pictures.
- Selfies: Speaking of pictures, I predict a time when we’ll look back on our thousands of selfies and cringe a little. “That’s so 2010s!” we’ll say.
