Children’s Books about the Seasons of the Year
Want to teach and discuss winter, spring, summer and fall with your child? Discover the top children’s books about seasons of the year to read.
Some winters in Los Angeles can still reach a high of 82 degrees—not exactly your typical winter season. Though I can’t complain about the warm weather too much, I do envy other parts of the country that get to enjoy the different seasons. Where you can actually see the distinct transitions from one season to the next.
As such, my kids don’t always get to experience the typical seasons everyone else does. “I wish it would snow!” they’ll often say around winter, or “Why don’t the trees change colors?” around fall.
We do have several deciduous trees that drop their foliage to the ground, but our seasons are pretty limited and don’t vary too much. And so, for us, our version of the seasons relies heavily on books.
We read children’s books about seasons to learn the importance and wonder of the changing year. That the cycle of a tree’s life or the migration and habits of animals and people are seasonal.
With a mix of both fiction and non-fiction, these children’s books about seasons and weather peek into the changes in nature.
Some focus on trees, especially since they change so much in a given year. Others describe the lives of animals and how their lives are affected by the seasons. And still the others dive into the traditions we celebrate during the seasons, as well as the science behind why we even see these changes in the first place.
I hope you and your kids find new favorite books from this list. They’re relevant year-round and work wonderfully no matter the time of the year.
