Children’s Books about Family

Want to show your child the importance and diversity in different families? Check out these children’s books about family, perfect for toddlers through big kids!

Children's Books about FamilyTalking about families to kids can be both simple and complex, don’t you think?

Different types of families can mean parents and children, but they can also include a wider web of relatives and extended family (I grew up with 27 cousins just on my mom’s side!). A child’s family can be his grandfather, an aunt or uncle, or even an older sister as a guardian.

And all families are different. Kids can look nothing like their parents, or their family looks nothing like their friends’ family structures. Family might even be people we have no biological or legal ties with, but a community we belong to, from teachers and classmates to family friends.

No matter what your family looks like, one thing is certain: families offer kids the stability, belonging, and love that they need.

Creating a family bond is one of the most important things you can do for your child. You can do this in several ways, like:

  • spending regular time together during meals
  • asking conversation starters for kids
  • organizing or attending family reunions
  • creating or passing down family traditions
  • looking through photo albums
  • creating a family tree

And of course, you can also read children’s books about family.

Picture books show your child the family diversity she may not be exposed to, from who makes up a family to what they do as regular traditions. She also learns how much she’s loved and valued, and why family relationships are important.

And she can begin to see that she’s far from being alone. She’s part of a community or group of people who love her—whether her family is one grandmother or 27 cousins.
