Curious what a work at home mom does? Take a sneak peek into how I balance work, kids and school this fall season.
It’s 9:30am and I just got back from my first grader’s “reading party.” Every Friday morning, parents are invited to read with their kids in class for half an hour.
This is just one of the new changes I’ve enjoyed since being a work at home mom. Four months ago, I was able to leave my day job and write full-time.
Working from home allows me to attend school functions, run errands and handle surprises (like when the wifi went down and I had to call the technician).
But as different as my schedule has been, I still rely on a daily routine to keep me focused. A routine helps me structure my time to fit both the important work and life’s endless to-dos.
The morning hustle
My mornings start at 5:45am when the alarm goes off. I use this time to check email, do a few online tasks and prepare breakfast.
By 7am, the kids are awake. We eat breakfast together then enjoy a few minutes of downtime. At 8am, my husband drops the twins off at preschool, and I bring our eldest to elementary school.
Even though school doesn’t start until 8:40am, I like to arrive early. I find good parking, my son gets a few minutes in the playground with friends, and we’re less rushed.
After my son is in class, I might use this time to run errands I need to do. For instance, on Mondays I’ll shop for groceries when it’s less busy than a weekend. Last week, I met with my accountant.
As you can see just from my mornings, a work at home mom isn’t always at home. I’m grateful I got a pair of Women’s Flex 2016 RN Running Shoe from Famous Footwear. This comfortable pair has been my go-to shoes when I’m out and about.
The work day
After school drop offs or errands, my “real” work day begins.
I do my most important work—writing—during this stretch of uninterrupted time (like writing this article). If I get nothing else done for the day, at least I’d have done the work that matters most.
Around 11am, I’ll also squeeze in a workout with my new Nike shoes. I’ll usually run around a trail nearby, use the treadmill or do a few workout videos.
After exercise, it’s lunch time. My former coworkers used to tease me for eating as early as 11am. It’s a habit I haven’t changed much, especially since I still wake up at the same time I did when I had a day job.
And once lunch is done, I’ll do my “second-tier” work—things I need to do but aren’t as important as writing. By 2pm, I’m winding down and clearing my head. I’m getting ready to pick the boys up from school.
After school routine
At 2:50pm, I pick the twins up and we all go to the elementary school to fetch my first grader. We all make it home by 3:30pm, where their snack waits for them on the table.
Between 3:30pm and 5pm is the kids’ free time to play. I also use this time to cook dinner, which we eat at 5pm every day.
And after dinner around 5:30pm, we might go to the park, especially when they have a ton of energy to burn. By 6:45pm, my husband and I are bathing the kids, reading books and putting them to bed. The twins are asleep around 7:15pm and our eldest by 8pm.
Work doesn’t finish though. I use the time between 8pm to 10pm to do my easiest work. Things I can do while watching the television, for example. And by 10:30, I’m (usually) asleep.
Put your best foot forward
The flexibility of being a work at home mom means I’m out and about much more than when I had a day job. Back then, the most I did was a quick errand at lunch, if that. Now, I’m managing my own time and balancing life with work.
