Being a good friend to others is an important skill children need to learn. Read these 23 children’s books about being a good friend to remind your kids the values of being kind to others.
At school drop off the other week, I overheard a conversation between two moms. The first was praising the other one’s daughter for having been a good friend to her son. My boy says the same about this little girl—how she helped him out in the classroom and “filled his bucket.” She’s popular among the kids because she’s warm, kind and a good friend.
Think back to your own childhood friendships. Maybe you befriended someone similar. Maybe you were that little girl, or you unfortunately saw others who weren’t kind at all.
I grew up with the whole spectrum, and I don’t doubt my son will, too. While I’d love for him to only have good friends, he’ll still experience tough friendships as well.
One of the themes in my son’s TK class is being a good friend. His teacher discusses being kind, filling others’ “buckets” and whether you’re being mean and dipping into buckets.
Bringing this lesson home, I gathered a list of children’s books about being a good friend. These books encourage children to treat others kindly and navigate the challenges of childhood friendships. I wanted to remind my kids the value of being a good friend to others.

Kids have been known to blurt mean words or exclude others who are different. Other times, they don’t understand how a strong friendship could end so suddenly. Maybe they see other kids who could use a friend but don’t know how to help them.
I hope you’ll check out these books to talk about the value of being a good friend. They can teach our kids—and ourselves—how important it is to treat others with kindness and respect.
