Halloween looks a bit different this year.
With trick-or-treating officially off-limits, I’ve had to get creative with getting into the Halloween spirit leading up to the big day.
For instance, we had a candy scavenger hunt around the house and played games like Halloween Mad Libs and word search. We’ve watched Halloween-themed movies like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Hotel Transylvania. We decorated our lawn with tombstones and witches, and later this month, we’ll go to a pumpkin patch to carve and decorate our picks.
I also plan to do “socially-distant” trick-or-treating where we’ll still dress up in costumes and walk around the neighborhood. But instead of knocking on people’s doors, I’ll put a piece of candy in their bags for every decorated house they could find.
And of course, we read Halloween books for kids, and the kids can’t get enough of them. They’re “spooky” enough to celebrate the cast of Halloween characters but not so over-the-top to actually feel scary for the little ones.
Some are even Halloween adaptations of well-known characters like Pete the Cat and the Click, Clack, Moo farm animals. Others are books from familiar authors like Dav Pilkey and Kevin Henkes. And still others are standalone Halloween books that have become family favorites in our home.
Hopefully these Halloween books for kids will get you set for the spookiest season of the year:
